Field with flowers near Arles

€37.00
Van Gogh was captivated by the colours of the landscape around the town of Arles. He particularly loved the contrast between the yellow and purple flowers in the fields. In the landscape, he felt he could see a reflection of the world he knew from his collection of Japanese prints. Japanese artists used large areas of colour in their compositions, often...

First steps

€37.00
In fall and winter 1889–90, Van Gogh painted twenty-one copies after Millet, an artist he greatly admired. He considered his copies "translations" akin to a musician's interpretation of a composer's work. He let the black-and-white images—whether prints, reproductions, or, as here, a photograph that his brother, Theo, had sent—pose "as a subject," then he...

Gauguin's chair

At the same time as his dreams, Van Gogh sees vanishing his idea of a community of artists scarcely sketched out in the company of Gauguin. "Gauguin's chair" and "Vincent's chair" reflect the image of solitude: both empty, they are the metaphors of the absent artists, where, in the past, they were discussing together.

Harvest in Provence

"Harvest in Provence", depicts a fragment of rural life as van Gogh experienced it on a given summer day in his thirty-fifth year. The brushstrokes in the sky are blown about by a nervous summer wind; the line of the horizon undulates under solar heat; the full-bodied farm buildings in the distance crave to be filled with nature's produce; and in the...

Landscape with House and Ploughman

€37.00
This landscape is unusual in its elevated, almost bird's-eye point of view. The crossing diagonals forming the borders of the fields and the ploughed furrows, the contours of the roofs, the row of cypresses - such vectors strain the composition, but not so much as to disturb the unity of the whole. The colouring of the painting and the action of the...
