Martin Schongauer, born about 1450 in Colmar and died in 1491 in Vieux-Brisach, is an alsatian painter and engraver of the late Middle Ages. Engraver (on wood and copper) the most illustrious of his time, his fame spread to Italy (Michelangelo admired him) and the Netherlands. Albrecht Dürer wants to become his disciple, but Schongauer died prematurely while Dürer is only a few days' journey from Colmar.
