Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer - Large Format Fine Art Prints and Reproductions

Today Johannes Vermeer is one of the most celebrated Dutch 17th century masters. Yet for centuries little importance was attached to his name.  Vermeer lived and worked in Delft all his life. Vermeer’s early paintings of historical scenes reveal the influence of the Utrecht Caravaggists. His later paintings are meticulous compositions of interiors featuring one or two figures, usually women. These are intimate genre paintings in which the subject is engaged in some everyday activity, usually in the light of a nearby window. Vermeer could render the way light plays on objects like few others.

Girl with the Red Hat

€37.00
Girl with the Red Hat is one of Johannes Vermeer’s smallest works, and it is painted on panel rather than on his customary canvas. The girl has turned in her chair and interacts with the viewer through her direct gaze. Girl with the Red Hat is portrayed with unusual spontaneity and informality. The artist’s exquisite use of color is this painting’s most...

The Art of Painting

€37.00
This is a painting of a workshop, a type common in Dutch painting. Vermeer, the painter, is dressed with distinction, in agreement with the piece represented. The artist has already painted on his canvas the laurel wreath of his model, which also holds in his hands a trumpet and a book, and must therefore be interpreted as Fama, the allegorical...

The Glass of Wine

€37.00
It is the man who pours wine to the woman - as an aphrodisiac intended to relax her resistance. His hand holds the handle of a white carafe which returns in several paintings of Vermeer like a significant leitmotiv. It can not not be seen in the center of the picture. A musical entertainment apparently preceded this scene as evidenced by the lute on the...

The Love Letter

€37.00
c. 1669-1670, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Vermeer chose an unusual vantage point for this painting. From a dim space in the foreground, a glimpse is afforded of another room with a domestic scene. An elegantly dressed woman looks up expectantly at a maidservant, who has just handed her a letter. The seascape on the wall behind them may well allude to the...

The Milkmaid

€37.00
c. 1660, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam A maidservant pours milk, entirely absorbed in her work. Except for the stream of milk, everything else is still. Vermeer took this simple everyday activity and made it the subject of an impressive painting – the woman stands like a statue in the brightly lit room. Vermeer also had an eye for how light by means of hundreds...

View of Delft

€37.00
Vermeer probably painted this urban landscape from the top floor of a house. The rays of the sun piercing the dark clouds and thus illuminating the buildings in the background on the bank are probably of political significance: the Nieuwe Kerk thus illuminated, housed since the first half of the century the tomb of Wilhelm 1st of Orange , and was charged...

View of Houses in Delft, Known as ‘The Little...

€37.00
c. 1658, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam This painting of a quiet street with a few figures occupies an exceptional place in Vermeer’s oeuvre. Straight angles give the composition balance, while the triangle of the sky introduces a sense of dynamism. The old walls, coarse bricks, and white plasterwork are almost palpable. Vermeer nonetheless took some liberties...

Woman Reading a Letter

€37.00
c. 1663, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Enjoying a quiet, private moment, this young woman is absorbed in reading a letter in the morning light. She is still wearing her blue night jacket. All of the colours in the composition are secondary to its radiant lapis lazuli blue. Vermeer recorded the effects of light with extraordinary precision. Particularly...

Woman Reading a Letter

€37.00
Woman Holding a Balance is a superb example of Johannes Vermeer’s exquisite sense of stability and rhythm. A woman dressed in a blue jacket with fur trim stands serenely at a table in a corner of a room. The scales in her right hand are at equilibrium, suggestive of her inner state of mind. A large painting of the Last Judgment, framed in black, hangs on...
