The 17th century painting - Large Format Fine Art Prints and Reproductions - Framed and not Framed

Academic painting. Tenebrisme. Golden Spanish Century. In painting, the taste of artists who have lived under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, has focused on the reason, the order and the quest for ideal at the expense of realism and naturalism. It is in this context that is founded the Royal Academy of Painting in Paris in 1648. This establishment has for objective to sit down even further the absolutism of the court and of the monarchy. It is still the Academy which determines the stylistic orientation and which breathes the necessary momentum to the artistic and cultural activities.

'The Skaters', Peasants in an Interior

Compared with the often ill-natured-looking drunkards of his teacher Adriaen Brouwer, the country folk in the paintings by Adriaen van Ostade are more mildmannered. They drink and smoke, but the atmosphere is generally peaceful. The pair of skates lying on the ground inspired the painting’s old, anecdotal title. 1650, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
