A Distant View of Dordrecht
c. 1650, National Gallery, London, UK
A Distant View of Dordrecht, with a Milkmaid and Four Cows, and Other Figures ('The Large Dort').
The painting is a monumental representation of four cows, three at rest, and one standing during the milkmaid's work. In the background the skyline of Dordrecht (Dort) from the south-east is shown with the Grote Kerk and the Vuilpoort, a water gate, demolished in 1864).
A similar view appears in another National Gallery painting by Cuyp, known as 'The Small Dort'. The church and the water gate are seen from another angle in 'The Maas at Dordrecht in a Storm' by Cuyp, also in the National Gallery's Collection. The resting cow on the right is also depicted in Peasants with Four Cows by the River Merwede
