Dance in the Country
1883, Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France. Dance in the City. Dance in the Country. One could multiply the oppositions between the two panels starting with the choice of colors: cold for Suzanne Valadon's dress, the model in Dance in the City, warm for Aline Charigot's, Renoir's future wife, who lends her laughing traits to the country dancer. Beyond their differences, the two couples appear to be related by the same movement, as if each couple embodied a sequence of the same dance.
