1885, Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France. Maternity also called The Child at his mother's breast. Pierre, Renoir's first son, was born March 21, 1885. Over the following months the artist performs a series of drawings and oil paintings with subject Aline, his future wife breastfeeding the newborn. All these works show figures in the same pose with the little Peter holding his foot in his hand. According to the assumed age of the child, it is likely that this composition was begun in Essoyes, the birthplace of Aline, where Renoir stays for the first time in September-October 1885.
