The Orange Trees
This canvas was painted in the park of the family property of Yerres. Martial, the painter's brother, reads while his cousin Zoe takes care of an orange tree and a dog is sleeping in the sun. Caillebotte gives to its composition a depth effect by superimposing a very shaded foreground and a background full of light. This choice induces chromaticism: the gray tones of the foreground contrast with the illuminated alley, the green lawn and the red flowers. The whole conveys the feeling of a beautiful and peaceful family afternoon under a blue sky, here totally invisible, but present.
